In the beginning, many of the popular games of the day, such as Defender, Pac-Man and Galaxian, weren't available for the ColecoVision, unless you had an expansion module which allowed you to play Atari 2600 games. Luckily, before the big videogame crash of 1984, Atari released a handful of its premiere titles for the ColecoVision. The best one of the lot is Centipede.
Like the coin-op classic on which it is based, Centipede is a fast and fun shooter spiced with more than a dash of strategy. The centipedes move smoothly and quickly down the screen, and the spiders are constantly popping out in front of your wand. Depending on when you shoot the centipede segments, you can arrange the playfield in a manner to your advantage. The closer you are to a spider when you shoot it, the more points you get. These elements of gameplay and strategy help boost Centipede above and beyond the average shooter.
One curious aspect of Centipede for the ColecoVision is that it's actually a bit harder than the Arcade version, even on the easiest level. Beginners may find this frustrating, but hardcore Centipede junkies will welcome the added challenges.
The action in Centipede is intense, but the game will appeal to both males and females, especially those wanting to upgrade from their adequate, but technologically inferior Atari 2600 version of the game. Whichever version of Centipede you play, there's no doubting that the way you can shoot a mushroom until it is gone or leave it partially intact is and always will be considered excellent game design.
The standard Coleco joystick works pretty well for this game, but if you've got a Roller Controller, you'll find that Centipede for the ColecoVision is one of the best home versions of the game ever made. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
