Do you love chess but find it difficult to find a human opponent? If so, your dilemma may be solved with CheckMate by MacPlay which lets you play the centuries-old game on your home computer. CheckMate sports an opening library of more than 300,000 moves and adds to its repertoire by "learning" as it plays. The game can predict your moves and assist you by demonstrating the best possible moves in any given situation. You can alter and set up any position you like and design your own chess sets by using a graphics program that can read and write PICT files.
The board can be viewed from any direction or angle using 2D or 3D graphics. A beginner's mode of play is available for novices and provides a chance to learn the game, especially through the use of an option to take back moves, all the way back to the beginning of the game. CheckMate offers play against the computer or you can challenge a human opponent at your computer or via modem. Other features include a built-in chess clock, infinite play levels, the ability to change sides at any time, multiple skill levels and more. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
