Based on all those spaceship combat board games where allocating energy for your ships every turn was like filling out tax forms, SSI's Cosmic Balance makes the genre playable with an easy interface for turn-based fighting and ship design. Combat is impressively nuanced, with a physics-based movement model and rules for everything from transporters to disruptor beams; think Master of Orion 2, only with realistic inertia. If your warp drives are damaged, you might not be able to slow down! The game's cult following included the editors of Computer Gaming World, who held a ship-design contest for a few years. A poorly-received sequel attempted to turn Cosmic Balance into a combat engine for a Spaceward, Ho!-like galactic empire game. ~ John Gorenfeld, All Game Guide
