Infinite Space is an epic sci-fi strategy-RPG designed exclusively for play on the Nintendo DS handheld. Players follow the lifelong adventures of Yuri, an earthbound boy whose dreams lead him to the stars at a time when interstellar civilization is on the brink of war. Along with the main character, the player's in-game personality is strongly tied to the ships in Yuri's fleet. As resources become available, players can purchase and customize up to five spaceships, choosing from over 100 basic blueprints and adding a selection of more than 200 equipment modules to provide firepower, defense, and special abilities. With experience, more powerful ship parts become available, and players can also ease their advancement through the story by selecting the best available crewmembers and assigning their on-deck duties. Combat is controlled through a fleet-based tactical action system, with a turn-based and real-time hybrid scheme in which players must make quick decisions in order to take strategic advantage of enemy positions and limitations.

In addition to victory and defeat in deep-space battle, the development of game's storyline is influenced by the role-playing choices the player makes throughout the game. While much of the combat is displayed in full polygonal 3D, the game's presentation is heavily inspired by 1980s anime, with emotive character designs and detailed cartoon cut-scenes that move the plot forward, highlighting important moments in Yuri's lifelong progression from an idealistic youth to a veteran captain. The game's designers estimate the adventure to offer as much as 70 hours of playing time through the complete story. In addition to the single-player campaign, a "Versus" skirmish mode is available for two DS players, through a local wireless connection. Infinite Space was developed by Platinum Games, creator of the contemporary high-def action game Bayonetta, in collaboration with Nude Maker, the Japanese developer whose limited release of the uniquely accessorized Steel Battalion became a Xbox collectors' item. ~ T.J.
