Nethergate

Nethergate, by Jeff Vogel is based around the time of Boudicca or Boadicea's rebellion in mostly Roman-controlled Britain. The situation is still undecided when you get sent to the Valley of the Brigantes. As either Roman soldiers or Brigantes Warriors, you must carry out a series of missions that will take you into danger, darkness and magic.
Your only magic is the Druidic magic of the Celts. There are five circles of power, with 8 spells each, and Nether spells, which are darker and vastly more powerful.
The graphic interface for this game is unequaled by many professionally produced games. The graphics are wonderful to see, very clear and almost realistic. The character portraits are taken from the work of real artists, as are the opening screen and icon.
In this game, the Romans are considered the bad guys, out to conquer the Britannic lands and replace the freedom of the natives with Roman order. Each party is sent out on missions that will take them into danger. All they have to protect themselves are their weapon skills and magic.
Each of the forces has their strengths and weaknesses. Celts can use magic, even the warriors. Romans cannot, generally, use or understand magic, but are excellent at fighting and can use armor, where Celts cannot.
Each side is offered different adventures, based around strengthening their own side and weakening the other. Along the way, you will have to fight Spiders, Goblins, rival forces, shadows, sprites, and even worse monsters. But there are allies waiting for you as well.
Will you rewrite British history? Will the Celts overthrow their Roman counterparts? Or will the Romans win again? It's all up to you, in Nethergate. ~ Lisa Karen Savignano, All Game Guide
