Timed to coincide with the release of a feature film, which is itself based on a graphic novel series starring a 23-year-old indie-rock slacker and video-game enthusiast, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a side-scrolling brawler that harkens back to 8-bit classics of the genre like Double Dragon and Golden Axe. Up to four players can join forces as they take control of Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Stephen Stills, and Kim Pine to battle The League of Ramona's Evil Exes. Gamers can team up to unleash devastating combo attacks, revive fallen comrades, and share health and coins, while occasional appearances from AI allies like Knives Chau also help when the action gets heavy. Enemies come in the form of an eclectic group of hipsters, aliens, paparazzi, and other assorted eccentrics, and as players battle they earn coins that can be used level up their character's strength, speed, defense, and willpower. The game is rife with comic book and retro flourishes, including cut scenes from Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Maley, 8-bit animations from pixel artist Paul Robertson, and more than 30 original music tracks from the chiptune group Anamanaguchi. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
