Earth is under attack! Wave after wave of aliens are descending upon our fair planet, raining a barrage of deadly missiles. As the pilot of a laser base that moves horizontally along the bottom of the screen and fires vertically, you alone are powerful enough to stave off the invasion.
Each wave consists of 55 invaders that are grouped in 11 columns, five aliens to a column. The group moves sideways in unison. When they reach an edge of the screen, they drop a level and begin moving in the opposite direction, and so on and so on. Your job is to destroy the invaders before they reach the bottom of the screen. If you let an enemy missile hit you or allow even one alien get too low on the playfield, you will lose a ship.
The invaders in the first two rows from the bottom are worth 10 points each. You get 20 points apiece for destroying the third- and fourth-row aliens. The top row nets you 30 points per enemy. Occasionally a UFO will float by at the top of the screen. Blasting this craft out of the sky will add 50, 100, 150 or 300 points to your score.
Positioned across the lower section of the screen, just above your laser base, lie four bunkers. You can hide from enemy fire behind these shelters, but they will erode a bit with every enemy missile and laser base shot received. Speaking of lasers, you can only fire one at a time. You cannot fire again until your shot is destroyed by a missile, reaches the top of the screen, or hits an invader, a UFO, or a bunker.
You begin a game of Space Invaders with three lives and will receive an extra laser base for every 1,000 points you score. You should try to score as many points as possible before Earth meets its inevitable doom. The invaders won't stop coming until all your laser bases are destroyed. ~ Brett Alan Weiss, All Game Guide
