As you wander around ancient Tenochtitlán, City of Mexico, you search for information on the murder of a prominent nobleman and a devastating plague that tortured innocent townsfolk. Some say there is a connection between the two and that a mysterious pendant is to blame -- the Sacred Amulet.
Using Cryo Interactive Entertainment's Omni 3D engine, The Sacred Amulet is a first-person adventure featuring a point-and-click interface, interactive conversations, and mysterious puzzles with a splash of history and ancient architecture. There are numerous environments to explore including Mexico-Tenochtitlán's purlieus, a Center of Ceremonies, and the Tlateloco Market. While in each area, you'll encounter over 50 characters who offer clues, suggestions, and historical information that may come in handy.
There are three gameplay modes including adventure, the exploration of Mexico-Tenochtitlán and documentation. Documentation is the most factual of the three as you'll have access to information on the surrounding architecture; this includes the history behind certain structures, government and various laws, the Spanish Conquest, and other chronological events.
In adventure mode, you solve puzzles and talk with the townsfolk. Spanning over 30 hours of gameplay, The Sacred Amulet incorporates exploration and observation -- you must thoroughly comb each location for clues regarding the burdening mysteries that haunt the grand city. In order to proceed, logic puzzles must be completed; once solved, the storyline progresses and part of the given riddle is unfurled. Conversely, the exploration mode of Mexico-Tenochtitlán disables the puzzles and allows you to roam the hallowed streets and magnificent buildings without consequence.
Because The Sacred Amulet uses a point-and-click interface, the cursor will change depending on the situation. You select your next location, pick up various items and clues, overhear and take part in conversations and gather information on certain items or events with each function represented by a specific icon. There's also a Codex that keeps track of decisions and an interactive map allowing you to quickly move between five destinations.
The Sacred Amulet features two save modes. Automatic mode saves progress automatically, while manual mode puts the fate of the journey in your hands. If you've selected the latter, use caution as the quest may come to a deadly halt! There are also options to speed up or slow down the in-game animations. ~ Matthew House, All Game Guide
