The Creative Assembly's Total War series carved a niche for itself in PC strategy gaming, combining real-time battle and turn-based empire-building with artisan production and affectionate attention to historical detail. This 2006 collection from publisher Sega includes the three main titles in the series to date, along with their three respective expansion packs.
Originally released in 2000, Shogun: Total War established series standards with its large-scale battles, its faithfulness to Japanese history, and its distinct blend of turn-based strategy and real-time action. The campaigns covers 30 years of conflict among the armies of such legendary leaders as Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen, Tokugawa Leyashu, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Total War: Eras features the most complete Shogun experience, including the original game and its "Mongol Invasion" expansion pack (which was previously available only in 2001's Shogun: Total War -- Warlord Edition package). The "Mongol Invasion" refines the original game's interface and adds more missions and campaigns full of fresh challenges.
Attention moves from feudal Japan to feudal Europe with Medieval: Total War, originally released in 2002. The game is set between the 11th and 15th centuries and features hundreds of historical battlefields from western reaches of Europe to the northern tip of Africa. Players lead the English, the French, the Byzantines, the Turks, or one of eight other rising nations. The game's retail expansion pack, Medieval: Total War -- Viking Invasion is also included in this Eras package. Centered in and around the British Isles, its main campaign focuses on 50 territories and eight playable factions: Vikings, Irish, Northumbrians, Welsh, Picts, Mercians, Scots, and Saxons.
The most recent games in the bundle are set in an earlier time in human history. In 2005's Rome: Total War, players choose to lead Rome, Carthage, Gaul, Macedon, Germania, or Britannia to conquer the world as it was in the early centuries of the Common Era. Rome offers a strategy map in full 3D that includes rivers, trade routes, mountains, and other natural and artificial features. Once players have orchestrated their own rise of the Roman Empire, the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack allows them to bring about its fall, which comes at the hands of the "uncivilized" tribes of Northern Europe that eventually tore the overextended empire apart at its seams. ~ T.J.
