According to Unreal Tournament Lead Game Designer Cliff Bleszinski, Epic Games' February 25, 2000, release of the Unreal Tournament Bonus Pack is to "thank our fans with some extremely fun additions and new surprises." The downloadable bonus pack features new characters, maps, levels, and relics that act as modifiers to various weapons and attributes. The bonus pack can be found at www.unrealtournament.com/downloads/.
Based on consumer usage monitored at online sites, Epic designed 11 new Deathmatch and Capture the Flag levels for multiplayer action. Included is Mojo, a deathmatch set in twisting, castle corridors and Hydro 16, a CTF battle between two industrial bases.
Three new characters are introduced to Unreal Tournament via the bonus pack, including favorites from the original Unreal. Included is the Nali Warcow, a domesticated beast trained to fight, and the Nali, ex-pacifists ready to prove their combat skills in the tournament. The third character is the Skaarj Hybrid, a genetically researched by-product of mixing DNA from both human and Skaarj, the result of capturing a Skaarj scout ship.
Modifiers, also known as "mutators," add a new dimension to Unreal Tournament and come in various shapes, sizes, and effectiveness. Examples of these new Relics include such items as the Relic of Regeneration that gives up to 10 health points every two seconds, up to 150, the Relic of Strength that doubles the amount of damage inflicted and the diabolical grinning skull known as the Relic of Vengeance. One and a half seconds after your death, the skull appears and totally annihilates anyone and everyone in the area!
Other relics include the Relic of Defense, Relic of Speed, and Relic of Redemption, each with specific properties relating to their names. The "catch" to the modifiers is that each player can only carry one at a time, although any number can be introduced to the game.
