Every 100 years, Count Dracula rises. In Castlevania, you take the role of Simon Belmont to put a stop to his evil. Simon is armed with a whip, which can be upgraded from "leather," to "thorn," to "Vampire Killer" if he finds the right power-ups. Also, Simon can use a limited number of special throwing weapons such as axes, a daggers, holy water, and a boomerang. Throughout the seven-stage adventure, Simon confronts such horrific entities as Frankenstein, Medusa, and Death.
