2D. Super Metroid is one of the greatest games ever made - it had it all: style, amazing and very atmospheric music, perfect difficulty, exploration, tough bosses, inventive use of weapons and power ups/"suit" upgrades.
I loved Metroid Prime because it captured the feel of the older games as perfectly as possible BUT to me a game doesn't need to be in 3 dimensions to give you a sense of immersion. If it is well designed that will take care of itself. And the 2D games were so I saw no need to change that.
I'm also not a fan of 1st Person games because I get motion sickness after a few minutes (thankfully that did not happen with Wizardry 8 and Morrowind both of which are some of my all time favorite games! I really loved Deus Ex but could only play it a few minutes at a time, sadly.) and that happened with Prime after a while.
I also think 2D CAN be state-of-the-art. Just look at Metroid Fusion. For a Gameboy Advance title that had amazing graphics (great use of color and wonderful level design), great music, and perfect controls. It was the pinnacle of GBA games just like Super Metroid was for SNES games.
And just look at the Castlevania titles especially Symphony Of The Night. 2D can be just as entertaining and immersive.
To tell you the truth I haven't played any 2D Metroid except for some internet rip-offs that sucked.
I have played Corruption and I'm trying to get the original Metroid Prime right now.The game is pretty damn awsome.Seriously it might be the best game I've ever played.
I will try and find a rom for Super Metroid soon,though.I've been hearing good stuff about it.

That's kind of an apples to oranges scenario...
I'll have to play corruption before I choose one camp or the other.
