The last time Nintendo attended the Consumer Electronic Show, their chief console competitor was Sega, entertainment legends icons figures Dakota Fanning and Justin Bieber weren’t even born yet, and we were still trying to figure out this wacky new “Information Super Highway.”  It was so long ago, in fact, that Nintendo’s main presentation involved “Project Reality,” which eventually became the Nintendo 64.  It comes as some surprise, then, that the Japanese game makers have decided to return to the Las Vegas-based expo next year.

It seems like the world isn’t quite ready for 3D TV.  The technology is out there, but it hasn’t yet been widely adopted.  Many consumers are waiting for more iteration so that TV manufacturers can perfect the systems and deliver the best possible 3D experience.  Others are waiting for the prices to drop, and plan to buy TVs once they’re more reasonably priced.  Still others simply don’t care about 3D, and have no plans to upgrade their TVs at all.  Sony, on the other hand, is rushing headlong into the new technology, and has announced that over 50 games are being upgraded to 3D, with over 20 of them being done by Sony, themselves.

For the first time in, well, ever, 2K Sports’ presence in the basketball simulation market went unchallenged this year.  EA tried to reboot their NBA Live franchise with the new moniker, NBA Elite, but failed to produce an actual game, leaving the excellent NBA 2K11 to stand on its own.  Today, EA gave the reason for the cancellation, confirming what everyone who played the demo already knew; "It was just going to be a bad game."

Just when we were comfortable with the fact that we’d never see a live action Halo movie, Microsoft comes and stirs up the pot again.  Frank O’Connor, franchise development director for MS, sat on a transmedia panel at the Future of Television East conference last week.  At this meeting, he said several things that indicate that a Halo movie will happen.  Not least of those statements; “There will be a Halo movie."

With all the focus on graphics, sound effects, 1080p this and AI that, one of the most often overlooked aspects to truly great game design is the music.

While a great score can't make a great game, a great game can be made epic by a great score. Take these five games, for example. Amazing games, amazing music. So good, in fact, you coan enjoy the music without ever having played the game.

GANTZ, VOL. 1
Written and Drawn by HIROYA OKU

I like science-fiction, so when somebody told me that I should a really cool sci-fi manga called Gantz, I took the chance. Full of action, intrigue, guns, violence, aliens, pretty girls, and the awkwardness of being a Japanese teenager trying to cope with whether or not he’s actually dead, Gantz was surprisingly right up my alley. If you’ve ever wondered what happens to you after you die, this book has the answer. You get transported to a room with an orb from another world that demands you hunt down aliens on Earth. Sounds about right.

Sub-Zero Gameplay Trailer

I think I've figured out how NetherRealm Studios has decided to market the upcoming Mortal Kombat. At first I was a little confused when the developer released back to back trailers for the reboot, both of which showed off the world's best-known yellow ninja, Scorpion. I thought to myself, "with a full roster of fighters, why focus so much attention on one character?".  And then, last week, the developer unveiled a video showing off the backstory for the world's best-known blue ninja, Sub-Zero. "That's more like it," I thought, "now we're getting some variety!". A new trailer released today brought with it the promise of seeing yet another character introduced, but alas, it ended up being more Sub Zero.

Gran Turismo 5 Install Will Take 50 Minutes, 10 GB HDD Space

Next week, one day before you settle down with four pounds of turkey, a two foot pile of mashed potatoes, and an above-ground pool's worth of gravy, you'll finally be able to pick up Gran Turismo 5. Thus brings to an end arguably one of the longest waits for any game in recent memory. However, a poster on the GTPlanet forums who has already secured a copy of next week's biggest HD release (DKC Returns may have the honors of "biggest overall") has informed the world that the game's install will take anywhere from 6 to 10 GB of storage space, and may require up to 50 minutes.

Valve Delays Portal 2

news

Quite possibly the most anticipated game to be revealed during the past E3 was Valve's Portal 2. The sequel to the genre-bending title promises more of what we loved - engaging AI characters, challenging puzzles, and a brand new perspective on both the platform and shooter genres. Sadly, however, the iconic developer has announced that the game has been delayed until April 18th, 2011, missing its original February release date. The bright side of the delay is that the Portal 2 delay will mark the shortest lapse in Valve's history.

You know who we love? Natalie Portman. You know what we love even more? Natalie Portman's hind quarters. You know what we don't love? Ignorant racists. Somehow, we manage to talk about both of those things on today's episode, and it's actually pretty interesting. You'll find out which of us are "Ass" men. You'll find out why Nick likes to sit down when he pees. It's an episode full of wonder and intrigue, and it's probably the best one yet.

Also, Josh replaced Paul today. It's like a regular episode, except without all the Italian hand gestures.

When Media Molecule first announced they were working on LittleBigPlanet 2, one of the promises that the devleoper made was that, before the game releases, a whole lot of other LBP content would be made available to fans of the series. Today, in a post on the PlayStation Blog, a more complete breakdown of what exactly that entails has been spelled out.

For a system whose financial failure marked the end of a major hardware manufacturer, the Dreamcast sure is beloved.  Despite the fact that it underperformed on store shelves, selling less than eleven million units worldwide, the Dreamcast library is experiencing something of a renaissance.  We’ve recently seen the re-release of Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure on Xbox Live Arcade and the PSN, and now Joystiq is reporting that a listing for the Dreamcast Collection showed up on GameStop’s site yesterday.

Last week Activision announced that Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops had broken the one day sales record set by Modern Warfare 2, leaving the world wondering when, not if, we'd get the word about the five day sales record, and the only real mystery was exactly how much it earned. The answer to "when?" is today, and to "how much?" is a whole lot.

It's a rare occassion on Continue? when we play a game that none of us have played before.  So when our Facebook friend Chase suggested that we play Dynamite Headdy for Genesis, we said, "we should do that.".  Sorry, this story seemed a lot more exciting in my mind. Regardless, you should watch as we try to figure out what's going on!
