Tim Schafer Ready to Make Psychonauts 2

news

From the perspective of gamers, Psychonauts was pretty awesome.  It garnered fantastic reviews, and holds a special place in the heart of many players.  From a publisher’s perspective, however, it was an unmitigated disaster.  Despite its Metarcritic average of 87, it sold far fewer copies than publisher Majesco expected, and remains one of the biggest financial disappointments of the last decade.  That’s why Tim Schafer’s announcement that he wants to start work on a sequel to Psychonauts is simultaneously thrilling and frustrating; He’s ready to make it, but will any publishers join him?

Mortal Kombat Sub-Zero Origin Trailer

Believe it or not, I actually care about the back-story of Mortal Kombat.  I know it’s silly and full of inconsistencies, but the combination of Eastern martial arts, American military concerns, and dark fantasy themes taken from the covers of heavy metal albums has always appealed to me.  That’s why I was happy to see a new character kharacter trailer for next year’s Mortal Kombat release.  This one focuses on Sub-Zero, one of the few fighters to appear in every single MK game.

Gran Turismo 5 Gets (Another) Confirmed Release Date

news

You would be forgiven if you thought that Gran Turismo 5 was just Sony's idea of a practical joke, or maybe even an extended April Fool's joke. The first inklings of a release date had it coming out a year ago, and then what followed was a litany of confirmed dates and delays the likes of which we've not seen since, well, Duke Nukem Forever. However, a post on the PlayStation Blog may nail down, once and for all, a final release date for the racer.

Rockstar Releases First L.A. Noire Trailer

news

Behold one and all, above you may now watch the premiere trailer for Rockstar Games' next big release, L.A. Noire. The developer states very clearly that every frame of that video is in-game, leading me to believe that Noire will be the best looking game from a company that has a long history of making great looking games. Honestly, just look at the detail on the facial animations, the crispness of the motion capture work, hell, you can almost smell the stale cigarettes that litter some of the scenes. While none of them are exactly photo-realistic, remember that you're looking at a game that is still in development, so there's plenty of time for improvement.

Harmonix, the developers that made music games a “thing,” is being sold off by its parent company, Viacom.  Viacom made the announcement this morning, declaring that Harmonix has been reclassified as a “discontinued operation.”  The company recorded a $299 million loss as a result of the classification.

Black Ops Beats Modern Warfare 2 Sales Record

news

Last year, Activision and Infinity Ward released Modern Warfare 2, which on its first day sold a total of 4.7 million copies for a total of $310 million in the US and the UK, setting a record for one day sales that many were certain would never be eclipsed. It turns out many were wrong. Today, Activision has announced that Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: Black Ops, which released on Tuesday, has broken MW2's record, moving 5.6 million units and earning $360 million. This is all according to Activision's internal estimates.

At an EA Games showcase last night, Ray Muzyka, co-founder of BioWare, announced that EA will be handing over many of the publishing duties for Star Wars: The Old Republic to EA.  According to a press release, "certain publishing, marketing and distribution responsibilities previously designated to LucasArts will shift to EA, so that all publishing, marketing and distribution responsibilities can be centralized for efficiency.”

Nintendo Trademarks "It's On Like Donkey Kong"

news

There are certain times in our lives when “It’s On.”  These are crucial moments, and should be treated as such.  Other times, however, are even more intense, and can’t adequately be described by the phrase “It’s On.”  These special times require a modifier to fully express the gravity and significance of the situation.  For years, the modifier of choice compared scenarios to a famed video game gorilla, but unless people want to pay royalties, they’ll need to change the way they express just how “On” “It” is; Nintendo has trademarked the phrase “It’s On Like Donkey Kong.”

Kinect Star Wars Game Expected Next Holiday Season

news

I’ll admit it; I’m intrigued by the Kinect. So far, the selection of games that are compatible with the technology is unimpressive, but I can see how developers could do some truly innovative and fun stuff with the motion-tracking device. As it stands, though, purchasing it now would be pointless. I’m not shelling out $150 for a new way to fast forward DVDs. If LucasArts’ planned Star Wars Kinect game pans out, however, then it might be worth the purchase price. That means I can wait until next holiday season before adding yet another electronic device to my entertainment center.

Hey, did you know that there’s a Ghosts N’ Goblins MMO coming out?  No?  Me neither.  That’s probably because it’s a 2D MMO that will be exclusive to the Korean market when it comes out next year.  Regardless, a new trailer for the game has emerged, showing some off the game's flashy visuals as well as some of Arthur's new moves.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Menu Easter Eggs Revealed

news

Last night's Call of Duty: Black Ops midnight release is easily this year's most covered video game event, with every local news station showing the long lines of gamers queueing up for Activision's latest entry. The game has a chance to break the sales record currently held by Modern Warfare 2, so it's safe to say that there are quite a few copies of the game already in players' consoles. Many gamers are of course interested in checking out the new storylines, testing out the new weapons, and rising to the tops of the multiplayer leaderboards. One area of the game that people probably aren't paying a whole lot of attention to has to be the main menu screen.

The game's menu takes place in what appears to be a high tech holding cell of some kind, with dozens of televisions scattered around the room. Appearing on the TV in front of you are the usual game options, which is where you may think the menu screen would end. But as it turns out, you can actually stand up from the menu television and walk around the room. Go to the right places, and you'll be able to unlock two additional games, Dead Ops and ZORK.

Guillermo Del Toro to Reveal Game Plans At VGAs

news

Since July, we’ve been waiting to hear more details about a rumored THQ game project headed by Guillermo Del Toro, director of Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Blade II (which is surprisingly awesome).  Speculation about what sort of game might come from such a uniquely visionary filmmaker has been rampant, but as of yet, all we know is that it will involve Lovecraftian themes, and that it will probably be seriously creepy.  At the IDGA Leadership forum, THQ’s Executive Vice President, Danny Bilson, revealed that Del Toro would be making a major announcement about the game at the Spike VGA Awards in December.

Donkey Kong Returns in this Donkey Kong Country Returns Trailer

What you see above is the latest gameplay trailer for Donkey Kong Country Returns, the highly-anticipated (at least by me) Nintendo platformer, due out in just about two weeks. While it's not the first time we've seen the game in action, it certainly is the most expansive and detailed trailer to date. It delivers a good mixture of what kind of levels we'll be playing, the variety of enemies that will oppose us at every turn, and, of course, more bananas than you can shake a stick at.

Xbox Indie Games Back Where They Belong

news

For consumers, the recent Xbox 360 Fall update provided plenty of new features, like an ESPN channel, improved voice chat, Kinect support, and a new, sleeker interface.  For indie game developers, however, the update brought only suffering and misery.  See, the Indie Game marketplace, which used to be under the main Games Marketplace tab, was moved to the more obscure Specialty Shops section; right next to the Avatar Marketplace and Game Room.  Indie devs were understandably upset with their new shelf space, and spoke out against the move.  MS was quick to respond, stating that the move would actually help Indie games, but today, they’ve quietly moved the Indie Game Marketplace back with the rest of the games.
