Aliens vs. Predator Banned in Australia

UPDATE: Oi, Throw Another Game On The Barbie.

by 00.19

UPDATE: Developer, Rebellion, has responded to Australia's denial of the game, saying "We will not be releasing a sanitized or cut down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices."

As Gamervision's resident expert on all things Australia, the heavy burden of relaying the message of Aliens vs. Predator being banned in the aforementioned penal colony falls to me. I wish I could say I expected more from the country, but these are the same people who think Mel Gibson is the greatest highway patrolman of all time.

Of course, just because this first attempt was denied, that doesn't mean the game won't see the light of day eventually. SEGA does have the option of appealing, but we all now how long the judicial system takes when it comes to appeals. What's likely going to happen, and this is just pure speculation, is that SEGA will change some of the game's content in order to get it approved for use in the prison's computer labs.

I'm hoping that they're able to strip the game of all its awesomeness, like eating a guy's face, or stabbing an Alien in the face, or blood. Yeah, the game's probably going to get nerfed pretty badly in order to get approved, and at that point, why even bother? The entire soul of Aliens vs. Predator will be sucked out, just like the hope of parole from each and every one of the colony's inmates. Perhaps one day, Australia will lighten up, and allow a bunch of rapists and murderers to exercise their demons through therapy involving video games. Until then, expect crime to continue rising at ridiculous rates.

Hey, Australia ratings board: just make a rating that's appropriate for adults, and then let gamers make their own decisions about which games to buy. It's really not that hard.

At some point publishers are going to either have to lobby really hard to get the ratings system changed, or cut this market loose. It's got to be really cost-prohibitive to continue to edit games for just one region.

    Good comment, Rebellion.
