Dead Space 2 Getting Online Multiplayer?

In Other News, I Jizzed My Pants.

How is it possible that virtually no news breaks all week, and as soon as the weekend hits there's a whirlwind of information? Obviously the job posting for a Senior Online Level Designer for Dead Space 2 could have been found at any point after it was posted, but Joystiq just so happened to find it on the Lord's day. Well anyway, the big news is that there's apparently going to be some online multiplayer Dead Space 2. Here's hoping it's more than just lame-o deathmatch.

Those of you who played through the first Dead Space will recall the feeling of isolation the developers imparted on the player, so I'm a bit curious just how they're going to integrate multiplayer without it feeling tacked on. Perhaps one of the reasons they're looking for a level designer is because they don't quite know how they're going to do it either. I'm not complaining at all. I think it's great when a game finds a way to extend its playlife through added modes. Do I feel like the multiplayer is necessary? Not really. Do I look forward to seeing what they're able to do with it? Sure. It's entirely possible that it could be something akin to Army of Two's multiplayer where you'll have various teams of Isaac's trying to eliminate the most necromorphs, or perhaps they'll take a page from the Left 4 Dead playbook, and have players take turns as necromorphs and humans. Nothing is outside the realm of possibility at the moment.

What I found most interesting about the posting though, was a little tidbit posted near the end. In a paragraph describing the company's philosophy about the game, there's one sentence that really stood out.

"The Games Label at EA is 100% committed to this IP, and has already worked on IP extensions such as comic, animated features, and action figures."

You see that there? EA is 100% committed to Dead Space. Now the reason that has my interest is due to the recent statements about EA only releasing 30 games next year based on how they believe they will sell. While it could be said that Dead Space is a game that proved itself despite not selling millions of copies, I'm more enthused by this statement for the future of other IPs that deserve second chances. Say Mirror's Edge for instance. I can only hope that same statement holds true for Faith. In any case, I'm still really excited for Dead Space 2.

I'd love to play as a necromorph. One of those little baby things with the spikes.

I think that Dead Space was to be a single player experience and to add a multiplayer will kill that experience. To me some things are better off being left alone.
