E3 09: Persona 5 Coming To Next-Gen Consoles?
Correction: No one at Atlus confirmed that any unannounced SMT game, including Persona 5, was currently in production. The only word out of the Atlus camp was that a new Shin Megami Tensei game was unlikely to be on the PS2. We apologize for the confusion.
Fans of Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei Persona series have been anxiously awaiting a next-gen update to the cult favorite series. That wait might not be too much longer. Today, Atlus told our E3 reporting team that Persona 5 "probably won't be on the PlayStation 2," and will likely be making the jump to the PlayStation 3 and/or Xbox 360. It's much too soon to talk about release schedules, but just the notion that the game is in development is good enough for me.
The PlayStation 2 versions of the series were highly enjoyable, and if Atlus gives the same love and attention to this next entry, you can be sure they'll have another critical darling on their hands. Be sure to check back later for more on Coop and Sarah's visit with the publisher.

We all knew it was coming, but it's nice to hear an official word. I guess it'll definitely be on PS3 and hopefully on 360, but that's just my guess.

Why the hell is it still called "the next gen" all of the consoles in this run have been out for two years. I'm about ready to hang it up and call it the "pretentious gen."
When I first read the title and article I thought maybe we weren't going to see it until the Playstation 4 comes out. It might be because I'm severely sleep deprived, but this outdated terminology is starting to grate on me like when people don't pronounce the "R" in libRary.

I'm right there with you, FemJesse, about the "next gen" comments. It is the current-gen and I just laugh at all the people that still say "next gen" when it comes to video games at the current, and near-future, moment.
As a comment on this posting... I'll definitely check it out. A great game series from what everyone I know that owns any of them tells me.

Yeah, this will be sweet. I mean, the other Persona games always had nice, clean graphics, but they were never the center of attention.
Is this because they were on the PS2 and Atlus was just making due with what it had, or was it because they would rather focus on addicting gameplay over presentation?

Paul,
I think that the latter of the two parts of the question is what you should be focusing on with this.

I hope they don't do something ridiculous though and change to like a FPS engine just because they feel they have to make the most of the PS3/360 power. Or change the look too much.
I love the look of P3/P4, it's clean yet uniquely stylish. And they've kept the look simple but they have a high polygon count - the games look perfect on my 42" HDTV whereas FFXII looks like a pixelated mess.

And re: "Next Gen". I remember when this term would only be used regarding a system in development. Lol.
