E3 10: Twisted Metal Coming to PS3 Next Year

Sony's Big Surprise Revs Up.

by 00.19

As the clock was winding down on Sony's E3 2010 press conference, Jack Tretton promised he had one more surprise in store, and he wasn't kidding. Despite the contrary statements David Jaffe had been making in the weeks approaching E3, it's been revealed that Twisted Metal is back, and this time it's on the PS3. Don't believe me? Watch this, and prepare to be taken back to a time when car combat was king.

Though it doesn't have an official date beyond a vague 2011, we do know a few details about the game. First up, the game will support sixteen-player online multiplayer, as well as two and four-person split-screen online and off. The new title will also mark the first time aeiral combat makes it into a Twisted Metal game, with players able to use helicopters. Twisted Metal will also use a class-based system in multiplayer, with different vehicles like motorcycles, trucks, and sports cars available for use by anyone seemingly at any given time. Factions will also play a part in the multiplayer for the title, and as the trailer alludes, Sweet Tooth will have his own gang of followers, as will all the other main characters in the game. Team-based matches will pit these gangs against one another across some pretty impressive city scapes.

I've never been the biggest Twisted Metal fan, but from the gameplay on display during the press conference, I may have to at least give this new iteration a shot. I guess I'll just have to wait to see what Coop and Sarah think of the game when they try it out later this week. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of these screenshots.

I'm seriously hoping for a return to greatness here. Isn't that Sweet Tooth figure supposed to be out some time soon? I want that.

Man... tons of fond memories of TM1 and TM2! Didn't get too into TM:Black though... But this looks like it could be sweet!

hope it has Jet Moto cameos again.

Twisted Metal was one of the biggest time-sucks I've ever played. I'd love to feel that suck again.
