E3 08: Guitar Hero and Metallica Double Dip Death Magnetic DLC
Like I reported way back on November 28th, when Metallica’s new album Death Magnetic hits store shelves, it will also hit virtual music stores across various platforms for Guitar Hero III. But that’s not all. The full album will also be released again as DLC when Guitar Hero World Tour ships. This way you’ll be finally be able to channel your inner Lars and tell all your bandmates they sound “stock.” While they didn’t have too much to say, Metallica’s official website broke it down as follows:
It's a first in both music and gaming . . . the same day that "Death Magnetic" hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for "Guitar Hero III!" We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release . . . who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out.
And for those of you who are anxiously awaiting the next Guitar Hero, "World Tour," we're ready for that too . . . you will be able to experience "Death Magnetic" for drums, vocals, and guitar when that game emerges this Fall.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this. Guitar Hero III DLC will work with Guitar Hero World Tour, so the move seems a bit needless to me. I understand some people won’t be buying World Tour, but wouldn’t this be added incentive? Maybe I’m just not a marketing whiz, and can’t comprehend the complexities of how this is a good thing. People who are getting World Tour would most likely wait to get the full experience anyway, so why not just hold it until that game ships? If this was available as a launch day download, they certainly would have a huge hit. Keep your eyes glued to Gamervision’s E3 coverage to see if any more develops.

maybe this will work, but it seems like another sneaky ploy by metallica to get us to think they're still cool.

I don't really understand it from a marketing perspective, either. But maybe it was a Metallica-driven marketing decision... it makes more sense from their perspective. Or maybe they feel like the vocals/drum addition is so much of an improvement that the product overlap doesn't matter (I respectfully disagree though).
