Left 4 Dead's "The Sacrifice" Trailer Tugs The Heart Strings
Well, It Would If I Had A Heart.

To some of you, this trailer is just a pretty nice piece of video game cinema. It's got action. It's got suspense. It's got guns and zombies and girls and zombies. To those of us heavily indoctrinated in the lore of Valve's Left 4 Dead franchise, this trailer is more than a brief montage of combat. This is the beginning of the end. It's the visage of a future we already know has passed. And it might just be the reason there's a tear welling up in my eye.
I've got a fondness for these characters, but most importanly, I've become attached to the old man in military garb known only as Bill. Bill's a stubborn old man, but he knows how to keep his friends alive. After playing as Bill for so many hours that I've lost count, you could say I've become one with the character. Like the great method actors, I immerse myself in the character when playing. I try to do the things Bill would do. I try to shoot the things Bill would shoot. That's part of the reason I'm so torn up by this trailer. You see, I know what Bill is going to do at the end of this DLC pack. It makes perfect sense. I'm not happy about it, but the way it all shakes out is the way it should shake out.
That said, I can't wait to play "The Sacrifice." I've been waiting for this mission pack since it was announced, and I look forward to strapping on my combat boots once more. I've got a score to settle with some zombies that don't even know why I'm angry. But they will know my vengeance. And my vengeance will be magnificent.
