*UPDATE* The video diary shows just how the game will play with online, and it's just like you'd expect. The only strange thing is, one of the developers off-handedly mentions co-op being the gateway for online franchises. If online franchises end up being included in Madden 10, you'll never see me again after August 14th.

Spike's GameTrailers Pre-E3 Special was not only chock full of some cool footage and interesting reveals, but there was also a few underwhelming announcements as well. Probably the least awe inspiring of all the segments was the Madden NFL 10 exclusive, where the developers unveiled online co-op.

When I got to look at the game a few weeks ago, it appeared as if EA was going to take Madden 10 to the next level on all fronts. The graphics looked sharper, the animations looked more fluid and intricate, and the gameplay engine was definitely reworked. To hear that the big online change this year will be the ability to play co-operatively with a friend has me scratching my head.

Co-op Madden has never been a play type that was enjoyable for more than a few quarters. Sure, the defensive side of the ball is a blast, but offense? Either you're handcuffed to being the quarterback, and thus hogging all playcalling responsibility, or you're one of the other offensive players, and you never know if you're getting the ball. And forget about trying to run the proper routes as a receiver.

I was hoping they would refocus their efforts on the online leagues, franchises, and overall competitive experience. This news not only has me questioning whether or not the issues with last year's online game will even be addressed. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Besides, it's not like I'm not going to buy the game now. Hopefully Coop and Sarah will have more on Madden 10 when they head to E3 next week, so stay tuned.
