*UPDATE* New Heavy Rain Footage, Screens

A Whole Mess Of Awesome.

*UPDATE* The folks at Gametrailers.com have released all of their exclusive video, which you can now check out below.

Over the course of the last few years, Quantic Dream has been slowly revealing more about their PlayStation 3 exclusive, Heavy Rain. We haven't heard much about the title since last year's E3, but since E3 2009 is just around the corner, the developer has graced us with more gameplay and screenshots from the upcoming action/puzzle/interactive movie game. One thing's for certain: I will be playing the hell out of this game.

Viewers who tuned into last night's edition of GameTrailers TV got to see nearly five minutes of footage from the suspense filled thriller. Even though it was broken up throughout the entire episode, there was a quite a bit to be excited about. We were introduced to a new playable character, an FBI profiler who is trying to track down the Origami Killer by tracing the suspected killer's car. I'll let some of the compiled clips speak for themselves.

It looks really good, but doesn't have nearly the same amount of tension that the footage gamers saw a year ago did. I guess that can be attributed to this footage being actual in-game action, versus last year's tease that isn't the game at all. One of the things I like the most is that crime-scene investigation section. The glasses are some sort of 3-D imaging system that allows for investigation of a scene without contaminating the evidence. Even his footprints show up in real-time. It's a neat little touch that sure to differentiate how the FBI agent plays versus the female reporter from previous previews.

While I can see how some naysayers may not be interested in this game due to the quick-time event nature of the gameplay, you have to at least give Quantic Dream credit for trying to take their developing style to the next level. What you didn't see in the footage above was another scene shown on television where the female lead, a reporter, from last year's footage was at a night club trying to get answers for her story. The scene was radically different from any of the other footage we've seen so far, and showed that there's quite a bit more to this story than moody, depressing moments. We've also now been introduced to two of the four playable characters, and I'm curious to see who else Quantic has behind the curtain.

Supposedly the game will be playable at this year's E3, but the devs are still not finished with the game, targeting it for a 2010 release. It must take a lot of time to render a 2000 page script with the Cell Processor. In the meantime, enjoy these screens, and stay tuned for our E3 coverage, where we'll have more on this promising title.
