Sony Reportedly Taking $1.1 Billion Loss

I Don’t Care Who You Are, That’s A Lot of Money.

For the first time in nearly 15 years, Sony Corp is reportedly going to post a loss. And it’s a doozy. According to Reuters, the company may be posting operating losses totaling $1.1 billion. Keep in mind that this is Sony as a whole, not just the PlayStation division or any other single brand. The news comes just weeks after hearing that Sony was estimated to be laying off around 16,000 employees worldwide.

While it’s unclear at this time just which parts of Sony will be most affected by this loss, one has to hope that not too much is taken away from the gaming division, particularly since the announcements made at CES about the record number of online members, and the $1 million in transactions through PlayStation Home.

I have to say being in the black for the length of time it takes a child to reach puberty is no small feat, so I don’t think Sony is going to be in this sort of trouble for long. The shame of it is that those in charge won’t be taking the fall for the poor decision making, but just about everyone else will be paying for this staggering amount of loss with their jobs. Sony’s certainly not the first company to be forced into massive amounts of layoffs these past few months, but here’s hoping that they’re the last. Maybe they could stand to scale back on the amount of camcorders and TVs they release in 2009, though.

I'm of the opinion they're probably doing poorly in the TV department. It can't help that LG and a few other younger companies have come out of nowhere with ultra competitively priced flat panel TVs and Samsung seems to have become more prominent the last few years. Their TVs have always been really pricey.

That is so not cool that the employees has to suffer for Sony's losses.

Sony is a very egotistical and selfish company that to me got what they deserve. They are always about making more money and being #1 instead of what's important, the care for the consumers. All their products are ridiculously pricey and if you need any assistance with costumer care, it's a hit and miss.

As for the gaming division, if Sony had only given the costumers what they want instead of telling them what they need, the PS3 would be selling in leaps and bounds.
