DC’s Elseworlds line provides out of continuity stories featuring familiar characters in unfamiliar situations. Case in point, Mark Millar’s Red Son, which posits the question, “What if Superman’s rocket landed on Earth twelve hours earlier, placing it smack dab in the middle of the Soviet Union?” Taking place over several decades, Red Son shows us just how different a world the DC Universe’s Earth would have been. Lex Luthor is a top American scientist married to Lois Lane. Bizarro is just a clone made up of Superman’s stolen DNA. Batman is a revolutionary movement. It’s brilliant, and just might be the best thing Millar’s ever written.
