Top Ten Games Sold In US Adjusted To Top Five
They Forgot To Count Absentee Ballots
by 00.19

So the NPD did a bit of backtracking on their supposed list of the
"Top 10 Selling Games of 2008" some of you may have read. Whether it was due to the response on the internets or just because they have nothing better to do than add and subtract numbers all day, the company most famous for sales tracking has released an updated "Top 5" list of the combined sales totals in the United States for 2008. Without further ado (all numbers in millions):
- Wii Play 5.28
- Madden NFL ‘09 5.25
- Grand Theft Auto IV 5.22
- Mario Kart w/ Wheel 5.00
- Call of Duty: World at War 4.63
Not so surprisingly, Wii Play still dominates the chart, but not by as much as previously reported. The gap between the top three games has closed quite a bit in less than a week, and while we all knew that Madden 09 was certainly going to sell a lot of copies (it does every year), even I didn't think it would outsell GTA IV.
Now, for the sake of still needing to find something to complain about (it's just something I like to do), all but one of the games on this list actually came out in 2008. Do I think these types of lists should be limited to games that only came out in the year sales are being tracked for? Yes. Is it evident that Wii Play has cemented its role as the new sales juggernaut? Sure. But if we're counting Wii Play, why aren't we counting Wii Sports? And why are we still not counting World of Warcraft? If GTA IV, Call of Duty: World at War, and Madden 09 have PC versions which count for this list, why are other PC games excluded? I don't expect any answers, so I guess I'll just have to be happy with this new revised list. Even if it's still not complete.

You have to give Mario Kart Wii a lot of credit. It is just under Madden and GTA4, but it was on a single console compared to the multiplat releases for the other ones.
And we all know the deal with Wii Play.
Meh. Only two games deserve to be there. Mario Kart Wii and GTA: IV. The others can shove a rusted rod up their anus-holes. Yes. I made up a combo of words. I rule!
