DC COMICS

Booster Gold #0
This is a great jumping on point for anyone who hasn’t already been reading this series. Geoff Johns has been at the top of his game on this title. Dan Jurgens reminds us all how powerful his art can be when he wants it to be. The guy didn’t get to draw Superman vs. Doomsday for nothing you know. “Blue and Gold” starts here, and for just $2.99, why not see what it is that makes this a great read?

DMZ #28
Since it started just over two years ago, DMZ has been consistently one of my favorite books. Brian Wood has created a complete world here in his alternate take on a post 9/11 America. Take a look as this stand-alone story showcases one of the supporting cast, and how they came to be such an important part of the story Wood is weaving. If you want to get wrapped up in political intrigue from the everyman’s point of view, drop your $2.99 on the counter at your comic shop, and demand this book as compensation.

Green Lantern Corps #21
Another great jumping on point for newbies. I’m not going to stop recommending this book, or plain ol’ Green Lantern, until everyone is reading it. The book is just good. End of story. Continue finding out more about the mysterious Alpha Lanterns, as “Curse of the Alpha Lantern” begins here. You spending $2.99 on this will make you happy. And that makes me happy.

MARVEL COMICS

Amazing Spider-Man #550
Last week, I hope you took my advice and gave this book a chance. I did, and was pleasantly surprised. Marc Guggenheim delivered then, and there’s no reason to think this week will be any different. And honestly, did LaRocca’s art not make you wish the book had more pages filled with his pencils, or what? Oh, you didn’t pick up Amazing Spider-Man last week? That’s cool. Pick up last week’s issue when you pick up this one. Eli Stone (also written by Marc Guggenheim) would spend $2.99 on this. And he’s supposedly a prophet. So he knows how good this will be. Follow his lead.

Captain Marvel #3
Lee Weeks is pretty much the shiznizzle. His pencils are on a level right now where very few people can touch them. The story here isn’t too shabby either (it’s another tie-in to Secret Invasion), but this is one of the only times you’ll see me recommend you check out a book just for how gorgeous the line work is. If I had the time, I’d lecture you more on one of the industry’s most underappreciated pencilers, but that’s for another column. Do yourself a favor: Pick up any random comic at the shop. Pick up this book. Open the two and compare the art. You’ll see why your $2.99 should be spent here, and not on that other book Lee Weeks isn’t drawing.

Fantastic Four #554
If you’re only familiar with the Fantastic Four from the movies, please do everyone a huge favor, and buy this book. If you only ever buy one book that I recommend, make it this one. Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch are a great artistic team. Their whole plan is to put this book back at the top of the charts, where it belongs. A brand new story starts here. Don’t miss out on this. Your $2.99 will have been well spent.

Fantastic Four: Lost Adventure One-Shot
Stan Lee. Jack Kirby. If not the two biggest names in comicdom, they certainly rank right up there. This issue was recently discovered and finished so that Jack and Stan could share their final issue of the “World’s Greatest Comic Magazine.” MARVEL went through all the trouble of painstakingly putting this together. The least you can do is show your appreciation for the classics by spending $4.99 for a little piece of history.

Punisher: Force of Nature One-Shot
This isn’t usually a book I would recommend to everyone, but former Philadelphia Magazine editor, Duane Swiercynski, writes this stand-alone issue, so I’m giving it a little shout-out. He’s a pretty good crime fiction writer in his own right (read The Blonde and The Wheelman), so seeing him work on the Punisher piques my interest. Support a local writer who gets his shot at the bigs for $4.99.

RED 5 COMICS

Atomic Robo #5
Atomic Robo has been nothing but an absolute joy to read. If you’re a fan of sci-fi at all, give this book a shot. Centering on a robot created back during WWII and his comical science adventures, Brian Clevenger has crafted a story and character most worthy of your $2.95. Last issue he fought a living Pyramid. This issue, he appears to find some answers about his past. And fight Nazi robots. Sounds like a winner to me.

TRADE PAPERBACK/HARDCOVER of the WEEK

Indiana Jones Omnibus V. 1
I don’t know a single person who dislikes the world’s most famous archaeologist. This book collects some of Indy’s lesser-known adventures for the first time in one spot. Most all of these stories are nigh impossible to find on their own, so seeing them bound here for only $24.95 seems like a blessing. And just in time to wet your appetite for the film, and video games. Did I mention the comic adaptation of LUCASARTS' “Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis” was collected here? No? Hmm. Well, now you know. So there’s really no excuse for you to not buy this.

See you next week.
