DARK HORSE COMICS
Hellboy: The Crooked Man #3
Mignola and Corben bring the conclusion to the latest Hellboy story this week. It’s been a pretty interesting tale thus far, and I’m sure the conclusion will be more than satisfactory. One thing I like so much about this book is learning about all these great myths and legends from around the world. If not for Mike Mignola, I probably wouldn’t be half as interested in Lovecraftian tales as I am now. Consider this issue your $3.99 gateway drug into madness.
DC COMICS
Northlanders #10
Brian Wood’s most excellent book about Vikings continues this month with the conclusion to the invasion story started last month. For $2.99 you honestly won’t find a better story of brutality and history than this. Every month, this book continues to entertain, and if it keeps up the pace, it just may be in the running for my favorite new series this year.
Superman #680
If you couldn’t tell from the cover, Superman’s faithful dog, Krypto, is back to lend a hand to his master in the fight against Atlas. While I’m not convinced this was the best story James Robinson could’ve written for his return to comics, all the little moments scattered through each issue have me filled with faith that the book will be great, where right now it’s just good. Renato Guedes still hasn’t sold me on his art, but quite frankly, anybody could be drawing this book and I’d still buy it as long as Robinson was writing it. Make sure to add this $2.99 book to your buy pile this week. You won’t want to miss out on what’s coming.
MARVEL COMICS
Captain America #42
The finale to the “The Death of Captain America” is upon us, and you can expect nothing less than a slobberknocker between Bucky Cap and the Red Skull. 42 issues in, and not a single disappointing one. You need to be reading this $2.99 comic every month.
Daredevil #111
Meet Lady Bullseye. What her plans are, nobody but Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark know. You can bet I’ll be paying the $2.99 to find out. Will you? That was rhetorical. There’s just no reason for you to not be reading this comic. Plus, if you’ve been missing out, guess what? A new storyline means this issue is a great jumping on point. This should be on your buy pile tomorrow.
Runaways #2
Terry Moore and Humberto Ramos are only on their second issue, but for all intents and purposes are doing quite nicely carrying on the book Brian Vaughn and Adrian Alphona created. I’m just glad these characters are back in my life every month. Having been there from the start when this book was part of the experimental Tsunami line, each time this series was on sabbatical, I missed it a lot. There’s books that have come out every month for 60 years that I don’t miss as much as this one. Definitely worth your $2.99 every time it’s on the shelf.
Ultimate Spider-Man #126
Brian Bendis. Stuart Immonen. $2.99. I really don’t need to say any more do I?
Trade Paperback/Hardcover of the Week
I was going to recommend The Alcoholic this week, but it just got pushed back to next week. I’ll talk about it more next week. Until then, save up some cash for the Baltimore Comic Con this weekend. We’ll be there. Will you?
For more comic sweetness, be sure to check TheQuarterbin.com daily.
See you next week.
