Surrogates

An interesting metaphor

by BurningStickman

So, I went to see Surrogates last weekend. It's a decent flick, and I'd recommend checking it out if you're into sci fi.

Like good sci fi ought to, it actually raises some interesting questions about the real world via metaphor. Without spoiling too much, the premise of the film is that, in the near future, some dude creates robots that people can operate remotely from their homes.

As a result, we lazy-ass humans soon start using these things for pretty much everything, and by the time the movie takes place, 99% of the human race never physically leaves the house. The other 1% is 'meatbags', who refused to go the surrogate route, and live in their own little reservations all over the world.

So, the metaphor is obvious here: Most of us spend a not inconsiderable amount of time doing the same thing as the characters in the film. Via the internet, we can go anywhere, see anything, all without having to get up out of our chairs. The metaphor can also easily be expanded to include video games, considering the world of Surrogates has basically made the earth itself into one big MMO.

I won't spoil how things play out, but a major theme is the question of whether mankind ought to, collectively, get out more.

So, any of you seen it? What's your take on the message?

I haven't seen it, but that seems like a pretty bleak view of the future. Even if I could get robots to do all my work for me, I still wouldn't. Maybe it's because I'm really bad at relaxing, but if I don't do productive things every day I feel bad about myself. That could mean going to work, working from home, writing independently, cleaning the house, exercising, taking a walk, checking things off my to-do list... but without ANY productivity, what do we have? What's the point?

Well, it's less that the robots are doing work for you as you're doing the work through the robot. Each bot is directly controlled mentally by a person.
