A few weeks back EA announced they would be making a free-to-play version of Battlefield 1942, to be release later this year for PCs. A few details were released and we were left with our hands sitting idly, wondering anxiously what was coming. They have come through and released a trailer that has me feeling kind of weird inside. 

The first half takes a somber tone, detailing a war that saw the demise of over 60 million people. All of a sudden it takes an injection of “Team Fortress 2” and shows cartoony characters riding tanks and sitting on the wings of planes as they zip around a bright, colorful battlefield. While it looks damn fun and the graphical style is cool, I can’t shake the feeling that there is something wrong with it and, in turn, me for loving it.

And I do love it. It isn’t just a re-skin of Battlefield 1942; it is a reimagining of the series as a silly, unrealistic romp through Nazi Germany. Sitting on the wings of fighter planes as they fly low to the ground and changing your Nazi’s outfit to make him look like a German porn star were what roped me in, the cute remix of the Battlefield theme is what sold it for me. Battlefield Heroes is due out later this year and we will be waiting.
