Name: Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree
Genre: Training
Platform: Nintendo Wii

Ever since the release and unpredictable popularity of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day for the Nintendo DS, companies have thrown out their own versions of mental stimulation simulations. One of the first ones to come out with its own unique style is Big Brain Academy. Released soon after, it earns stars in taking a slightly different route but still maintaining the idea of smartening up gamers.

In its trek over to the world of the Wii, Big Brain doesn’t change too much from its roots. While its training exercises are fun, they do not hold a candle to Wario Ware or Mario Party’s games. So as long as you don’t go in expecting to have a similar experience you will not be disappointed.

The main game mode is called “Test.” Test is where it guides you through a gauntlet of different activities to figure out the weight of your brain. The games in it are easy and interesting; dealing with math, memorization, and more. None are ridiculously fun, but it does leave you with a sense of accomplishment. That is what makes this game feel different than other games. You may feel proud after winning a game of Mario Party, but Big Brain feels like, well, less of a waste of time in relation. As your score grows you may feel smarter because of it. Is it a placebo? Possibly, but either way: feeling good has never been a bad thing.

The games multiplayer is actually very unlike the test in several ways. Though you are playing the same games as you would in single player during the tests, they feel completely different. You may only need to pop balloons numbered from lowest to highest, but the distraction caused by the person next to you and their side of the screen can render you retarded. You slow down and have to take your time and so do they. It becomes a physical and mental battle.

Wii Degree does have an online mode- or so I am told. It is really not a game made to be played over the internet like Gears or Halo. You are not supposed to play against random people and should expletives at them while tea bagging with the Wii-Mote. It is just not that kind of game. Because of that I am not going to dock them any credit when it comes to a basically unexplained online set up. I was able to figure it out after a while, but it doesn’t say anywhere on the box that there even is multiplayer other than saying the “Game Experience May Change During Online Play.” It involves sending mail to your friends and them replying with their own “Student Record.” It is confusing, but if I knew anyone with this game I am sure we could get it to work.

It is not a game meant for Joe Pwner or Natalie Noobkiller: it is meant for the common gamer. While others who consider themselves more hardcore may still enjoy it, this is definitely not for everyone. My grade?
