BioShock 2 In Development
With a Q4 2009 Release
by Coop
It isn’t really a surprise that 2K Games is developing BioShock 2. The first title, which released late in 2007, sold extremely well and swept away nearly all critic's Game of the Year awards, with some calling it one of the finest games ever made. Rumors have been circulating since its release involving possible sequels or, more likely, prequels to the deep sea adventure detailing the fall of Rapture.
In Take-Two Interactive’s Q1 fiscal report the have finally confirmed the obvious fact that BioShock 2 is being developed. This is it, folks. Let the pigs fly through the frozen tundra of hell, nothing is certain anymore.
“2K Games said today that BioShock 2, the sequel to the wholly owned and internally developed title, is being developed by 2K Marin and is planned for release in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. The critically acclaimed BioShock title has sold over 2 million units worldwide since its launch in August.”
Setting it at a release within two years of the original is actually much sooner then most analysts expected. With game development being as time consuming as it is in this generation, developers usually take their time and spend at least two to three years creating a title from start to finish. Unless they plan on reusing some of the same locations and characters, releasing it so soon will be a definite grind on 2K Marin.
2K Games has stated that lead developer of the original BioShock, Ken Levine, would still be attached to the sequel. If this means he will retain his previous position is unknown.
This also means that details of the title will likely be announced in the coming months, possibly at E3. Gamervision will make sure to keep you updated with every bit of BioShock 2 news announced in the future.
