For the first time since the systems surprisingly popular launch, companies are actually developing games for the Nintendo Wii. This is not to be confused with mediocre ports with tacky controls (see: waggle) or even good controls (see: Madden).

EA seemed to be the first company to jump on the wiiwagon and, it seems, the music bandwagon with the release of Boogie. Built from the ground up for the Wii, it uses both the motion sensing capabilities and a microphone that comes with the game to make a singing and dancing game.

First of all: the game requires you to have friends. I know, this may be a struggle for some of you, but there is something about singing like an idiot in front of other people as opposed to singing like an idiot by yourself that seems to work much better. If you don’t think you will ever find someone to play Boogie with don’t consider buying it. Many of the game's features require you to either play with a friend of show them what you have done and, sorry to say, your cat will not be too interested in your “Milkshake” music video.

The controls do not feel wacky or stupid – they feel right. It could be done with an x button and a d-pad but it would be like playing DDR in that same way. The dancing portion requires you to swing the remote to the beat. It is sensitive so at no time do you feel like it is accidental. You move with the joystick and special moves by hitting the buttons. This is so much more fun than it sounds, I swear to god it is, and actually feels like a fighting game. There is even a two-player dance off that has it feeling even more like one.

The singing is exactly what you have come to expect from any game of its type. It measures your pitch and gets you ready for Rock Band. The track list is a little shallow for a singing game – only 39 songs – but they have a good collection and odds are everyone will find something.

There is also a mode to record yourself and dance to make into a music video. This would be a useful tool if the game featured any kind of sharing mode. Alas, this is the wii and developers are lazy, so you are left clapping at your own creations and hoping someone else wants to watch.

It isn’t perfect but deserves to be played. If you are a fan of the genre or just want to sing your head off while customizing your quirky character this game is for you. Due to the niche it fits in I can’t recommend everyone buy it, but it is worth a rental.
