For the last two months Infinity Ward has been promoting Call of Duty 4’s open beta. Every update to their website, every press release, and every whistle out of a developer’s mouth spoke of an August beta for players. Today the floodgates opened and they failed miserably to keep their word. First and foremost: don’t ever release a specific time to go to a website for something. This is Game Industry 101 here, guys, let’s be reasonable. At the listed time (12:00pm Pacific) their site was already crashed from people pounding at the doors for a “token.” Twenty minutes later they said they were done with registration for beta. There were dozens of better ways to go about doing what they did. How about a random drawing of the millions you forced to register for CharlieOscarDelta.com? We jumped through your hoops only to land back where we were. Great. What’s this? You are done getting people for beta? What about, well, everyone? This was an irresponsible move and a smack in the face of the gaming community. Infinity Ward should be ashamed of themselves.
