Cell Phone Game Reviews - Episode One

The Phantom Menace

by Coop

Cell phone games are really hit or miss and with the lack of functional demos available there is no way to find out if your five bucks is going to a good cause. Gamervision.com has struck a deal with Verizon Wireless to bring cell phone game reviews to you. Every weekend I will have a few reviews to check out, all games that are playable on the average cell phone. Because of how small the games are and the lack of a true way to “rent” them, there will be no score out of ten and no “rent it” option. It’s buy or trash on this show, I hope you enjoy it. If you have any requests for a game that you have seen that caught your eye, tell me about it and I will work it into the next Episode!

Doom RPG

Everyone thought id software was crazy when they announced that they were making a cell phone version of Doom. Some suggested that we call the nut hut when they said it would be an RPG. However, the Doom RPG is proof that bad ideas can yield amazing results. It features good graphics (comparable to Doom II) and easy controls.

The gameplay is a mix of shooter and RPG with experience gained and items collected as you move your way through the many levels. Plotwise there isn’t much there, but compared to the average Doom game I guess that is to be expected. It sports a good game length and is well worth the money. To date this is my favorite cell phone game.

Cheerleader Smash

I’ll admit, the name alone sold me on this game. The concept of throwing footballs to knock down stacked cheerleaders is a funny enough premise to warrant a peek. This didn't stop me from assuming it would suck, but surprisingly Cheerleader Smash is a fun, complex title. Throwing the football sends the scantily clad women in different directions to allow for combos and domino effects that are fun to mess around with. While this isn’t the havok or euphoria engine in play, the game sports a fun physics system that leads to a good amount of outcomes. It isn’t extremely long and could be beaten on a train ride or two, but with the different ways of tackling each puzzle it is actually not a bad buy.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Out of all of the games I have downloaded for the cell phone this was my least favorite. Every problem you can assume it could have it has, and this might be the biggest slap to the Sonic series since Shadow the Hedgehog. The game tries to be a direct port of the original Sonic game for the Sega Genesis and fails due to hardware and control issues.

Unless your phone has a wicked d-pad this game isn’t worth the money. It lags and moves slowly – both things that ruin the Sonic experience of speed. Sega’s grab at a quick buck is not appreciated because spending a dime on this lackluster port is spending far too much.
