Chinatown Wars Released for iPhone

One of the Best Handheld Games of '09 Gets App'd

by Coop

Today, the previously teased iPhone version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was released to Apple's App Store, costing a pricey $9.99. Well, pricey when compared to other games on the platform, at least. When held up against the $30 PSP version and $20 DS iteration, the $10 cost doesn't seem like too much of a hurdle. That's $10 for an even more portable version of one of the best handheld games of 2009, so if you haven't picked it up yet (and the game's sales numbers seem to suggest that), this might be the perfect time to do just that. Emphasis on the word "might."

For as wonderful of a game as Chinatown Wars is, it's going to be hard to justify picking it up right away. iPhone ports have a tendency to be utterly terrible, and while the DS version had minor touch screen controls (which were likely brought over easily, I'd think), the lack of physical buttons might completely ruin the experience. No, not hinder, not lessen, ruin. In the past, great games like Pacman have been rendered utterly unplayable thanks to the phone's lack of a D-Pad, and Chinatown Wars is a good deal more complex. There's a chance the same fate might befall Rockstar in this case, rendering an otherwise stellar title not worth the harddrive space it takes up. Is it worth the money? Only time will tell.

Or $10, that will tell too.

Even for $10, I don't want to play this game on the iPhone.
