CryEngine 3 Tech Demo Impresses

Running on 360, PS3, and the Souls of Orphans

by Coop

As promised, Crytek is scrapping its ugly, dirty, abominable CryEngine 2 in favor of the console-friendly CryEngine 3. But can they really pull off Crysis caliber graphics on current generation consoles? Take a look at the video above for a fairly definitive answer to that question. Pay close attention to the foliage, particle effects, and dynamic lighting.

The answer, by the way, is yes. Yes, yes they can.

The engine seems to be running perfectly fine and maintaining a high frame rate even when running on the inferior Xbox 360. There are definitely noticeable differences between the two consoles; a fact the inevitable comparison videos will surely nail that point home. Note the variety of locations and inclusion of Nanosuit-wearing NPCs, which either hints that Crysis 2 will feature time travel or this is, in all actuality, literally a tech demo. Either way it's worth a watch, and shows what the last few years of this generation will be capable of.
