Crytek Announces CryENGINE 3
Because the CryENGINE 2 Suuuucked
by Coop

Crytek has announced that they will be debuting the next iteration of their graphical engine, the CryENGINE 3, at GDC this month. Aside from being able to produce even better graphics than the CryENGINE 2, it will also be optimized for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Carl Jones, Director of Business Development CryENGINE, had the following to say about the announcement:
“CryENGINE 3 is a revolutionary change from our previous PC-only engines – and we’re applying a similar revolution to the service we provide to developers using the software to create extraordinary games. CryENGINE 3 will set the benchmark for complete game engine solutions in performance, and services to game engine licensees and their players. We’ve been preparing a long time for CryENGINE on consoles and we’re confident that Crytek will again amaze developers at GDC.”
When asked for a comment, the president of Guerilla Games yelled "SAFE" and threw his hands out, wiping sweat off of his brow.
Beyond keeping up with the rapidly changing game world, odds are this has more than a little to do with their acquisition of Free Radical. Rumors of Timesplitters being bumped to the CryENGINE appeared seconds after the announcement of the purchase, and creating an engine that wouldn't cause consoles to shit themselves is a step in the right direction. Still, I'm damn excited to see what the new system can handle; it's not like Crysis was an eyesore of any kind.
The press release is below.
