Dragon Quest IX Bought by 2.34 Million Japanese People

That's Two for Every Person in the Country

Anyone unconvinced that Square-Enix made the right choice in moving the hyper-popular Dragon Quest series onto the hyper-popular Nintendo DS should look no further than the game's sales. In its first two days of availability in Japan, Dragon Quest IX sold 2.34 million copies. To put it into perspective, that's a lot of video games.

2.34 million units in two days puts the game over the last Dragon Quest title, which was released for the PS2. Dragon Quest VIII sold a little over 2.2 million in its first week, a feat that the DS title has already surpassed in only 48 hours. Dragon Quest has always been one of Japan's biggest sellers, but these numbers are still impressive.

It still has a bit of time before a US release, which Square-Enix hasn't set yet. I doubt this will be the last time we hear about IX before it makes its way onto US Shores. Either way, I loved VIII so I'll be picking this one up, it's as simple as that. What about you?

Dragon Quest is such an amazing series in that it sells in such high volumes, yet is REALLY close to being the exact same game over and over again. It just gets a little prettier/slightly more advanced each time, The character and monster designs are basically identical throughout the entire series, however.

Wow, Japan looooooooooves Dragon Quest. I have yet to discover what makes it so insanely popular. I like it, but not like that.
