Dungeons & Dragons Online Console Bound?

Rogue Finds Job Listing, Disables Doubt

by Coop

A job listing by Turbine has sparked a rumor that Dungeons & Dragons: Online will soon find itself with a console port. The posting calls for a Senior Console Engineer with in-depth knowledge of both Turbine’s PC MMO engine and 3-10 years of console development experience. It doesn’t take a Kalashtar to know where this is going…

Not only that, but just recently there was a posting on DDO’s official forum where a developer stated that the team is “working full-tilt on several things that are still under tight wraps," and that "DDO will be getting more and more focus from Turbine's marketing and PR teams over the coming months." That, mixed with Turbine's CEO recently saying that they planned on exploring multiplatform options, sort of leads to only one conclusion.

Sorry, fellas, but you rolled a natural one on your bluff check this time. With simple controls, real-time combat, and built-in voice chat, Dungeons & Dragons Online is one of the only MMOs I could see taking well to a console conversion. The game is also my poison of choice currently, so it definitely excited me to know that the game might get some worldwide attention in the near future.

This would also be the first major MMO to be ported to consoles this late in the game, with all of the others having been developed with that conversion in mind. Final Fantasy XI, Phantasy Star Online, and even Age of Conan were simultaneously developed for both platforms – this would be groundbreaking. Turbine PR has declined to comment on the issue, but we should expect to hear something in the near future.

Console MMO's never really caught on. I mean, look at Phantasy Star Online and FFXII on PS2/360. Nobody played them! Probably one of the reasons that Marvel MMO was cancelled, too.

Ah well, I wish them luck. I also wish I could find a campaign around here to play the actual pen and paper D&D... I want to try out 4th edition!

This is one of the MMOs that I have actually installed on my computer...but have never played. Nick is right, console MMOs never do too hot (Everquest Online adventures was absolutely horrible). But I'd definitely give this one a shot if it made the console jump.

This one would actually work, though. It doesn't suck with console controls and has in-game voice chat!

    @ NickDynmo

The Marvel MMO wasn't so much cancelled... it was just changed a bit

I don't go in for PC MMOs (bad experience with a M.U.D. addiction in college) but I'd definitely give this one a shot.

Typo from my last comment: Final Fantasy XI, not XII.

And while I am looking forward to Champions Online, the Marvel MMO was indeed separate, and caneled.
