E3 08: Micro Hands-On Games from the Floor
X Blades, This is Vegas, Ninjatown, BiA, and Battlestations

X Blades
Ostensibly, X Blades is an action game featuring quick swordplay, frantic gunfighting and powerful, room clearing magic spells. Playing the game for about ten seconds, however, reveals that it's really an excuse to put a 15 year-old anime girl in the most revealing outfit ever conceived. It's not a bad game, per se, but other than the T&A, there's really nothing that sets it apart at all. The visuals are nice enough, with some very nice (skin) textures, but there's just something creepy about jiggle physics when applied to A-cups.
Ninjatown
It’s adorable, it’s fun, and it’s addicting. Time restraints stopped me from getting too long with this title, but talking to the game’s developer it is very obvious that this isn’t going to be a bad game – it can’t be. A complex, ninja based tower defense game? What’s not to like? I got some hands-on time and loved it; the game definitely brings a new perspective to a tower defense genre.
Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway
The gameplay is good and it’s great to see the series evolve, but the graphics were so choppy and the jaggies were so apparent that it is hard to recommend this to anyone. There’s still some time left in development and I really hope they fix it up, because I am definitely ready for another trip to the Brothers in Arms series.
Battlestations: Pacific
The developer gave me a walkthrough of the game and showed off several of the improvements from the original, including ground combat and enhanced graphics. As a whole, the experience of Battlestations is still one that is unrivaled by other wargames and Pacific looks to be a great addition to the series. Being able to target specific sections of ships, sending off landing boats, and over 100 units will make Battlestations: Pacific one to watch as its release approaches.
This is Vegas
This is Vegas looked like a cheap Grand Theft Auto clone originally, but after seeing it in action and getting some hands-on time with the title I can say that it is actually more than that. Midway’s goal with the title is to bring adult playground of Las Vegas to life, giving players the chance to dance, bartend, and fight their way around Sin City itself. It was surprisingly fun and the style was very cool, and there just might be enough differences from Grand Theft Auto to justify picking this game up.
