Epic Mickey Uncovered: First Details of Warren Spector's Take on Disney

Oswald Wants Revenge

by Coop

Since it was first announced, "Epic Mickey" has seemed too good to be true. Ties to Deus Ex's Warren Spector, a dark, moody atmosphere, and promises of delivering a new take on Disney's franchises didn't feel like something that Disney would even consider, let alone allow. However, with the next issue of Game Informer promising details it seems as though Epic Mickey is, indeed, a reality. Recently, Eurogamer received some news on the new adventure, and there's enough to turn even the most skeptical Mouseketeer into a true believer.

The story follows a world separated from the sunny locales of Kingdom Hearts. Instead, it focuses on the dark void populated by the disowned and forgotten side of Disney. Run by Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney's first property, this land is filled with rides and characters that the world forgot about, and Oswald is none too pleased. To exact his revenge - Epic Mickey is, at its core, a revenge story - Oswald sends The Phantom Blot, another forgotten Disney character, into Mickey's world, causing the colors to run in an attempt to destroy that world. Mickey's journey is, as expected, to stop Oswald.

As rumored before, the title is, indeed, a Wii exclusive. The reasoning is simple, and relates more to Mickey's tools throughout the game, rather than the target audience. In order to traverse the world, Mickey needs to use paintbrushes, erasers, and other artist's tools, all of which can be made much more tangible on the Wii. It's puzzle and, in a way, art-oriented, something that could end up paying off for fantastic gameplay possibilities.

More details, including Mickey's supposed "retro remake," will have to wait a bit longer, but I'm finally starting to come around on Epic Mickey. It's not that I was ever against the idea, it's just that it seemed too good to be true. Hopefully this month's Game Informer will prove that the project is more than hopes, dreams, and a handfull of fantastic artwork.

oh my gosh this sounds AMAZING. i am possibly setting myself up to be disappointed here, but so far there is not a thing about this game that sounds like it will be anything less than awesome.

Looking at pics of Oswald, I have to wonder why Disney made the switch to Mickey. They're practically identical.

Depending on how this turns out, this may actually cause me to want a Wii.

The Wii needed another must-have exclusive. The Nintendo fan-boys were staring to falter in their resolve.
