First 3D Games Hit Zune HD

Includes Audiosurf, Project Gotham Racing, and More

by Coop

Microsoft has updated the Zune Marketplace with several new games for the Zune HD. Any filthy barbarians still using the archaic brick that is the old Zune should know that this news doesn't apply to them, and that they should get back to trying to start a fire to cook their god damn Wooly Mammoth.

In the time it took me to type this, four-thousand Apps were approved for the iPhone, but there are two major differences: these games for the Zune HD are free, and there's a chance they might be awesome. They're also the first games on the Zune to be in 3D, using all those megabits and horsepowers Microsoft crammed into the sexy digital media device. There's a bowling game, which is likely about as fun as Elf Bowling 2, a skateboarding game, which is probably ten times better than Tony Hawk Ride will be (just kidding!), and Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition, which might be the prettiest on the list.

The highlight, however, is obviously Audiosurf, which has taken far too long to find its way onto anything besides the PC. For those who haven't had the pleasure of riding a roller coaster inside of their own freaking mind. It's like the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey except it makes sense. The title allows players to "surf" their "audio," creating unique levels for every MP3. It's a match made in heaven for MP3 players, and it makes me want the stupid Zune HD even more. Now if they'll only release a bigger one...

The full list is here, and it's a free update for anyone with the device. If you have a Zune HD, then I'll now say goodbye, because this is likely the last time we'll see each other. Take care, starchild, see you on the other side.

The end of 2001 (or Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite) shows astronaut David Bowman traveling through a Star Gate which was created by the monolith in Jupiter's orbit (think Jodie Foster's traveling at the end of Contact but with the special effects technology of 1968). He is then placed in a meta-physical construct of a series of rooms, where he is literally able to watch his own aging process as the intelligence behind the monolith downloads Bowman's thoughts and creates the hybrid "Star Child", which is the fetus seen orbiting Earth at the end of the film. It is this Star Child that is responsible for creating the supernova on Jupiter, and thus giving birth to the second sun in 2010.
