Free Realms Hitting PS3 Next Year
PlayStation Eye Support Huh?
by Coop

It is being reported that SOE president John Smedley discussed the PlayStation 3 version of Free Realms during a meeting at GDC Austin after a Q&A about the title. "It's next year sometime, toward the middle of the year," he said, refusing to commit to an actual date. It's very likely not that he didn't feel like divulging it, but that he simply didn't know. MMORPGs on consoles always have trouble finding their footing and making a shelf, and Free Realms is likely no different. What's even more interesting than a murky release window is the news he dropped after, which went well past the normal news that drops after a Q&A.
"For the PlayStation 3 version," he said, "it's very likely that the Eye is going to be something we support." How, exactly, Sony's PlayStation Eye will work into an MMO is yet unknown. The camera has a microphone built in, so there's a chance they might just end up allowing users to voice chat with it, but there could also be something much, much different. Video chat in an MMO? It's possible, though a bit crazy. Then again, where would SOE be if they weren't willing to take chances and be insane?
Oh, right where they are right now, right.
