Gears 2 Multiplayer Details Released
The Term Meat Flag Sounds Deliciously Patriotic
by Coop
The internet has been set afire by multiplayer news for Gears of War 2 today, as Epic has let slip an immense amount of information confirming that all of our happiness and anticipation for the title is not misplaced. As hinted at before, there will be a wide assortment of ways to humiliate an opponent you have downed, from weapon specific executions to using their body as a meat shield. This definitely adds a new level to the game, as I can’t think of any shooter that has allowed for the taking of hostages (well, other than Counter-Strike).
Several new game-types will be added and some will be revitalized. Gears of War’s “Assassination” game-type has been altered to allow for player respawns as each team tries desperately to take down the opposing teams’ leader. One of my problems with the original game’s multiplayer is that it can be brutally hard for new players to get into due to the round setup, so adding respawns to more game-types should help fix that.
The other game-types announced are Wingman and Meatflag. Wingman will feature teams of two, identical characters battling against each other. This is sort of like what everyone wanted from Army of Two, where players will be able to fight alongside one ally to take down other teams. Meatshield, however, is the coolest of the new news.
“Perhaps the coolest new game type is “meatflag,” a reimagined capture the flag in which, as its name suggests, has the flag replaced by a meat shield. The twist of “meatflag” is that the flag will be an AI-controlled character found in the center of a map, who will confront with whoever comes near. The goal of both teams will be to take this living flag down and transform it onto a meat shield to take it to the ring of light flashing on the team’s camp. Another hilarious twist of this game type is that the meat shield won’t decay with the opponent’s attack as in campaign mode. Instead, this will cause the meat shield to be at liberty again, thus becoming an instant menace to the player who was carrying him around. Furthermore, this meat shield character will have his own place in the leaderboard.”
Other news, including more weapon and character details, can be found by going here or picking up one of the ten thousand magazines with the information that will be hitting newsstands in the next few days. Gears of War 2 is still set to be released by the end of the year, and with all of this buzz surrounding it the game is set to be one of the biggest holiday titles of 2008. I eagerly anticipate this game. I just hope it features Baird more. That guy was awesome.
New issue of EGM came in the mail today. Woo!
And the biggest improvement:
Only 37 horrible glitches that will be exploited by talentless online gamers because Epic is too lazy to beta-test their games. This is a major reduction from the 476,372 that were in the original Gears of War
I didn't find too many other than host advantage...what else?
you can do a glitch where you do a giant backflip and land on parts of the environment that you can't normally access, there's a glitch where you will be walking around shooting but everyone else sees you raodie running and it makes you almost impossible to actually hit. There's a glitch where you can roadie run up to someone and they automatically go into the chainsaw death animation even if you just run by them without the chainsaw reved. There's a glitch where you can chainsaw someone and they don't die, and the next time you rev the chainsaw they get sliced to pieces even if they're on the other side of the map. There's the fact that you can melee people over and over again without them being able to move or dodge. The list goes on and on. It got to the point where I don't even play the game online anymore. Epic said they fixed a bunch of the glitches in one of the updates (the one where they chaned the stickyness of the cover mechanic) but online gamer figured the glitches out again within days. "Instead of hitting RB+x, now you hit LB+X and it still does the EXACT SAME GLITCH!". Epic didn't even care enough to put client-side hit detection in a patch for the game. It would have fixed all of the Host-Shotgun stuff and it's easy to do, every shooter worth it's salt has client-side hit detection.
I just hope they fix all of this stuff for Gears 2, and I hope they actually spend some time testing the multiplayer before they ship. I would really like to play the online for more than two months this time, as meatflag sound awesome.
Don't forget the smack-talking 12 year old glitch that makes me want to quit playing.
