Gears 2 to See Large Multiplayer Patch

Woo! Yeah Baby!

by Coop

Epic's Mark Rein is ready to make your day, and has posted a list of fixes coming to Gears of War 2's online multiplayer on the game's online forum. Gears 2's multiplayer is awesome, but in the time since launch it has been expectantly glitched, exploited, and taken advantage of, requiring a speedy post-release title update to tie up loose ends and clean up the experience.

Below is Rein's post, filled with fancy ways of saying "we fixed bugs."

We’re fixing a whole bunch of online exploits. For example we’ve fixed the ability to wield an invisible shield, melee through some walls, gain infinite Lancer ammo and equip a shield and a two-handed weapon simultaneously plus many more.

We’re fixing a whole bunch of online exploits. For example we’ve fixed the ability to wield an invisible shield, melee through some walls, gain infinite Lancer ammo and equip a shield and a two-handed weapon simultaneously plus many more.

We’re also making several small changes to improve the overall online gameplay experience. A few of the ones that might interest you are; increased penalties for quitting matches early, adding additional spawn protection against planted grenades and chainsaw attacks, and adding the ability to see the Submission flag carrier destination by using Tac/Com.

We know you folks love achievements so on the achievement side we’re adding achievement progress numbers to the War Journal, increasing the frequency of in-game Achievement progression notifications and adding some new Achievements for DLC.

This is just a very small list of some of the things that will be in the next title update but one more item which has been talked about a lot in our forums deserves a special call out...

About that shotgun...

We fixed the client side hit detection on the shotgun so that in a high-latency (i.e. “laggy”) match, the shotgun will be more reliable. We’ve also fixed another bug whereby shotgun and boomshot rounds could strike the ground when firing from the hip.

If you're like me, you searched through that posting a few times to see if there were going to be any changes to the game's matchmaking system, which hasn't worked as intended since being smashed by the onslaught of Gears of War 2 fans at launch. Finding matches still takes forever, and it doesn't appear that a fix will be coming in this specific patch, slated for sometime this month. Hopefully the other latency issues resolved will help clean up the servers to the problem will fix itself, but on the bright side...

Yay, Achievements?

sounds like a pretty beefy patch. How does the matchmaking system work? Didn't Gears 1 have the same issues?

Gears 1 didn't have as many issues.

"We're fixing a whole bunch of online exploits" sounds like they're doing a whole bunch, now, doesn't it?

if by the same issues you mean didn't have proper matchmaking at all, then yes. it seems by trying to better the experience from the first game that they simply overshot what they could actually accomplish, and they wonder why this game is "underperforming" on xbox live.

how does the matchmaking try to work though? Is it similar to CoD4's online setup?

I couldn't care less about matchmaking, but it'll be nice to see a little more consistency in our private matches.

They SHOULD be fixing the fact that matchmaking is shit. It should go back to the old Gears 1 online style. Not to mention, get rid of the goddamn stopping power, chainsaw is impenetrable, or make the shotgun faster.

And I'm gonna guess that they're going to charge us for the DLC right? Assholes, they just took $10 from us already!
