Joe Madureira Confirms Hollywood Interest in Darksiders

Ongoing Comic Series Also a Possibility

Darksiders might have just been released, but that hasn't stopped speculation on the future of THQ and Vigil's new property. The game's early high review scores, too, help fuel this, and it appears that THQ's gamble with Joe Madureira, creative director for Vigil and popular X-Men and Ultimates artist, might have proven to be beneficial. In an interview with VG247, Madureira, confirmed plans to expand the series in the future outside of gaming.

To be more specific, he mentioned that there has been some interest from Hollywood, and mentioned that an ongoing comic series is a possibility. This would, obviously, supplement the already released graphic novel that accompanied pre-orders of the game to store shelves.

“We’ve gotten some interest from Hollywood, we’ve talked about doing a comic series,” said Madureira.

The only issue with this statement is that there are actually two trends within the gaming industry. One, which is rapidly becoming more popular, is to turn video game licenses into comics, movies, and anything else that people might buy. The other, which has become more popular over the years, is to say that these things are going to happen, hoping to spark additional buzz about the game (and, thus, sell more copies). It happened with Kane & Lynch, and while it appears as though it might actually get a film treatment after all, odds are the early rumors were based on... nothing.

Hopefully Joe Madureira's words come from the first trend, since the post-apocalyptic world of Darksiders would make for a wonderful, epic film. The only issue is the cost, since creating a game that scratches the surface of Darksiders would be an incredibly expensive film, with outlandish special effects and massive sets. If a studio out there is willing, I could see it being wonderful.

A comic series, on the other hand, seems much more realistic than a Darksiders movie. I'm sure Joe Madureira's name carries enough weight to get a few good names on board, and the story could absolutely extend to a monthly book. If the game sells as well as it deserves to, I'm sure we'll hear more about this very, very soon.
