Mercenaries 2 In-Game Ads Destroyable

And Boom Goes the Scion Billboard

by Coop

Mercenaries 2 is set to blow everything up in just a few weeks, and with EA throwing in-game advertisements in every product they could justify, I had found myself wondering if the billboards, mascots, or whatever commercial products were going to be added to the game would be destructible. Luckily, the market isn’t as corrupt as I had thought and Jay Sampson, Vice President at Massive, has confirmed that they will, indeed, be able to be taken into pieces.

"It's purely a byproduct of gameplay and this notion of a highly destructible environment. Sticking to our ethos of 'do no harm to the game,' we tagged the parts in the environment for ads and like everything else in the game, they can be destroyed. It's mirroring what the studio wants out of gameplay and making the most of it...If we did anything that wasn't destructible [in Mercenaries 2] it'd be awkward. It's taking advantage of the full environment."

There are “Visit Battlefield.com” signs all over the online portion of Bad Company and they are also destructible, so I am happy that the developers haven’t buckled to any of the criticism that I am sure was brought up doing boring, droning marketing meetings. If I decide I want something gone I think a well placed rocket should do the job, regardless of how much money they are paying EA. I’m sort of surprised they didn’t even make them a little harder to destroy. I mean, sure, some things might blow up like everything else, but the McDonalds golden arches are like cockroaches, no nuke could take those bad boys down.
