UPDATE: New info on the gameplay!

If you were worried that Nintendo wasn't going to bring anything to the table this summer, you couldn't be more wrong. At the Nintendo Press Summit, the publisher announced that the highly anticipated Metroid: Other M is due out on June 27th. That's right, just two months after Super Mario Galaxy 2. Nintendo is putting a lot of eggs in the summer basket, meaning that they either have a huge winter lineup that we don't know about... or they feel like ignoring the holiday season like they did last year. Honestly, I could see it going either way.
On a related note, Nintendo is yet to announce what the hell type of game Other M is. The video made it look like a third-person, first-person, 2D side-scroller fighting shooter, though I have a feeling that isn't the case. Or it is, and they're taking a WarioWare approach to the series. Seriously, the video was like a montage of four different Metroid games, and more than the release date, I think we'd all rather find out what we're going to get from Team Ninja on June 27th. Later, press will get their hands on the game for the first time, so I expect that they'll announce more information very soon, because there's still more we don't know about Other M than we do.

Hey! Look! The press release has information on what the hell Other M is! Thank god! Good news, it sounds awesome. Here it is:

The game looks at the classic franchise from a new perspective: While much of the game is reminiscent of 2-D side-scrollers, players can switch the perspective into 3-D at any time as they explore the twisting passages of a derelict space station and delve deep into a cinematic, never-before-told story of bounty hunter Samus Aran’s past. This new approach uses a new control scheme in which players use the Wii Remote™ controller held sideways to battle enemies and navigate the expansive, gorgeous environments in classic Metroid fashion, then aim at the screen with the Wii Remote pointer to blast foes in first-person and hunt the world for clues and hidden passages.
