New Red Dead Redemption Screens Wrangle Your Heart

Then it Lassos Your Legs, and Drags You Through the Wild

by Coop

A fancy Super Bowl commercial? Rockstar Games doesn't need that nonsense. That's for companies like Electronic Arts, and companies like Electronic Arts haven't made any Grand Theft Auto IVs recently. When Rockstar wants to spread the word about a product, they simply release the news. Before long, it's everywhere, and the natural ways of the world helps it spread to all six billion people. In this case, they want everyone to know about some new images for Red Dead Redemption. They show off the protagonist using a lasso in all sorts of ways, like tying up horses, typing up people, and even tying up horses. It's a crazy, wild, crazy world out there, people, better bring a rope!

All kidding aside, the implementation of the lasso in Redemption is sort of a big deal. When mixed with the euphoria engine, it means some realistic wrangling, and for a game set in the Old West that's pretty important. Games have used it before - the Call of Juarez series uses the lasso like Link's hookshot - but none have really grasped what a lasso is supposed to be able to do. In Redemption, you'll be able to capture foes, tie them to the back of a horse, and drag them through the desert. What practical use does that have? Beyond being awesome? I have no idea, but I'm sure that dragged people are more likely to talk about buried Indian gold than people who haven't had the pleasure.

I better have to save at least one dude from a hanging by shooting out the rope (w/ realistic physics).

Did you ever have to do that in the first one?
