Nintendo Gets into the Holiday Spirit
Allows Gamers to "Gift" Games to Friends
by Coop
Ah, the holidays. A time for family, friends, and game delays. It is in this festive mood that Nintendo has decided two things. Thing first is that the Wii is beating the living shit out of sales records, the competition, and my dog as is, so there is no way they are dropping the price:
"We're still focusing on how to meet booming demand," Iwata said Friday. "We're absolutely not considering a price cut." He said Nintendo was ramping out 1.8 million Wii consoles per month but that a supply crunch was inevitable during the Christmas sales."
Thing second is that they want to embrace this newfangled "internet" and allow gamers to send each other gifts over the Wii:
"Nintendo also unveiled a function Friday that allows users to send each other games over the Internet using the Wii's shopping channel.
With a few clicks, a user will be able to select a game to send as a gift to another user online, Iwata said. When the recipient accepts, the Wii automatically launches the shopping channel and begins the download.
"We think this will be a breakthrough in encouraging customers to spread news of fun games word of mouth," Iwata said. "We also hope to spur more users to connect their Wiis to the Internet," he said."
There isn't a date for this but odds are it will roll out after the Turkey slaying begins. I am intrigued this feature and wonder exactly what the hell it will do. Can Nintendo really break away from its competition in the ways of downloadable whathaveyous and allow games purchased and played on the Wii Shop Channel to be sent to friends? It would be an interesting move if the games can be shared like, well, real games.
Come on, Nintendo, make pretend that you don't want to virtually cheat your buyers on the Virtual Console! As of now all that is being done with it is ports of games we have already purchased a dozen times with no upgrades whatsoever. Realize how big of crime that is, and let us at least swap games.

I can't wait to start gifting Goldeneye 007 to all my friends and allies! Now if only Nintendo would add it to the VC!!!!!
I don't want Goldeneye on the VC, I want it on the DS.
so instead of a price cut, they give us the ability to buy each other stuff?
I guess I know what all my wii friends are getting for Christmas....Mario
You're more likely to see GoldenEye on XBLA than on Virtual Console, as Microsoft now owns Rare, the developer behind GoldenEye.
Why would I rather it on the DS? Because Nintendo has said they are not going to update games for the VC or make them have anything like online play. That said, go back and play Goldeneye 64. Time was horrible to it, I couldn't play for more then five minutes before getting motion sick and wanting to throw the controller.
